What is the Best Time of Year for Kayaking in Kerala?

Kerala, known as God's Own Country, is a tropical paradise interwoven with magnificent backwaters and rivers. If you're planning a trip specifically to engage in water sports like kayaking in Varkala or Alleppey, timing is everything.

The Golden Season: September to March

The absolute best time for kayaking in Kerala is during the winter months. After the heavy monsoon rains wash the state clean, the landscapes are lush and vividly green. From September through March, the weather is pleasant, hovering between 23°C to 30°C. The humidity is significantly lower, and the backwaters are calm and incredibly scenic.

The Summer Months: April and May

If you visit during summer, kayaking is still very much possible, but it is highly recommended to stick exclusively to sunrise or sunset kayaking. The midday tropical sun can be intense. Early morning paddles during these months offer some of the most spectacular, uninterrupted golden-hour lighting you'll ever see.

The Monsoon: June to August

While Kerala is romantic and beautiful during the rains, heavy monsoons can make certain water sports dangerous. Some kayaking operations, particularly sea kayaking, may be paused. However, the sheltered mangroves of Anjengo Lake often remain safe enough for experienced operators to run limited tours during light drizzles, which offers an intensely moody and beautiful experience.

Whenever you choose to visit, ensure you book with a certified operator like Shiva Kayaking to ensure you are paddling in safe, monitored conditions.
