Ponnumthuruth Island

Ponnumthuruthu is an island about 12 kilometres south of Varkala. From Nedunganda, board a country boat and travel for about 30 minutes through the backwaters to Ponnumthuruthu.

Ponnumthuruthu means “Golden Island” in Malayalam. Legend has it that the Travancore Royal Family used to hide their cache of gold and ornaments on the island to keep it safe, hence the name Ponnumthuruthu.

This lush island is ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Temple

The Shiva Parvathi temple, also known as ‘Thuruthu kshethram’ by the locals, is located on this island. The temple is set among dense coconut groves that have grown along the entire stretch. The temple is over a century old, and the entire island is owned by the temple. The temple had been in ruins for a long time before being rebuilt about a decade ago.

The island and temple are owned by the Valiyapurackal family.

Ambience at the island

Because of its enchanting atmosphere, the island is a must-see. Shiva Kayaking from which the journey to Ponnumthuruthu begins. We do guided trips to the island. Jetty and the walkway to the ferry is made of coconut husk, mud, and coir waste.

A view of the island from the kayak in the evening will undoubtedly calm any nature lover’s mind. When the evening sun caresses the island’s greenery, it will take on a distinct glow.

The island is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The island will undoubtedly be a bird watcher’s paradise, thanks to the cormorants, egrets, and herons that can be found there. Eagles and gulls can also be seen here. A variety of water birds can also be seen here.

A coir village can be found on the mainland on the other side of Ponnumthuruthu.

Sivarathri festival

Sivarathri is a major festival celebrated at the Ponnumthuruthu Siva Parvathi temple. It is the festival that brings life to the otherwise sleepy island. During Sivarathri, many devotees spend the night on the island, and the place is enchanting when lit up with lights.
